In the past, sports in general were considered a male activity, and high endurance sports like triathlon were especially restricted to male only participants. But just as societal attitudes have evolved in regard to gender and sporting activity, the gear associated with a given sport has evolved with the needs of the athletes themselves. With the introduction of triathlon specific wetsuits to the sport, suit design and technological advances have made it possible to highly refine the characteristics that separate a men's triathlon wetsuit from one that is tailored for female competitors.

The subject of using a triathlon wetsuit has been a bit controversial ever since they first began being used. Many events, such as the Ironman competition in Hawaii, do not allow the aid of a wetsuit. There are valid arguments on either side of the issue, but the fact remains that a wetsuit provides an excellent advantage to any triathlete who chooses to use one.

If you are a male triathlon competitor and you are thinking about purchasing a men's triathlon wetsuit, there are a few things to keep in mind while searching for the perfect suit.

All wetsuits are not alike. I know this sounds pretty obvious, but I've actually seen people at triathlon competitions wearing wetsuits designed for surfing or scuba diving. If you're new to triathlon and you are contemplating wearing a wetsuit for the swim, be sure you shop for a triathlon wetsuit! These types of suits are designed specifically so that the suit is thinner in the shoulders, elbows, and armpits and thicker in the areas where you need buoyancy while swimming – the upper legs and chest. Also, the exterior of most modern triathlon wetsuits is designed for competition swimming. A great deal of research and material goes into the hydrodynamic function of the suit.

Make sure you can wear a suit at your event. If you are going for your first triathlon and you are considering wearing a wetsuit, check the rules for your event to ensure wetsuits are permitted. It would be a huge waist or time and resources if you were to purchase a suit, test it and train with it, only to arrive at your event and find the suit is not even permitted.

Be sure you can test your suit before settling on a purchase. Many online retailers or local shops have very friendly return policies, allowing you to test your suit before you make a final decision. Another option to save a bit of money is to find a shop where you can try on a suit, and then find it online for an even cheaper price. Searching online it's fairly easy to find discount codes for many of the online triathlon gear retailers. Every triathlon wetsuit brand is cut a bit differently, so definitely find the suit that fits you best. You will be much faster in any suit that fits properly than you will in one that is slightly baggy (greater drag) or binding (less flexible, more restrictive).

Many experienced triathletes choose to swim without the aid of a wetsuit because they see not wearing a suit as a truer test of one's abilities. Other triathletes, even the more experienced one's, feel that if you are allowed a competitive advantage then use it! Whatever you have in mind, undeniable reasons exist justifying why it is good to wear a suit. The greatest benefit of using a triathlon wetsuit whether you be male or female is the added buoyancy they provide. This is specifically advantageous to beginners who feel their legs may be "too heavy" while in the water. Not having to use your legs as much during the swim will also be also save your legs for the run and bike ride, and you wont be burning all the energy the large leg muscles generally require. Triathlon wetsuits will also keep you warm if your event is in particularly frigid water, and as stated they seriously cut down on drag as well. All of this adds up to a great deal more energy you will have later for the other two events of the competition.

Many of the diehard purists of the sport feel that triathlon wetsuits should not be allowed in the sport. In many instances these purists have a valid point, and in a great deal of events having a wetsuit is just impractical and becomes more of a hindrance than an advantage – think transition during a shorter triathlon or swimming in warmer water. There are other instances in which it is almost impossible to go without a wetsuit and the competitor may not even be able to participate without the aid of a suit. For many athletes, the wetsuit is something a beginner may find valuable, but an experienced triathlon competitor should eventually transition away from using a wetsuit. Whatever your take on the subject, triathlon wetsuits will always prove to be a valuable tool for any athlete who wishes to test their own physical mettle.

All legitimate scuba training agencies require you to possess basic swimming skills in order to become a certified scuba diver. Exact requirements may differ, but you will need to at least be able to swim a distance (possibly up to 200m), tread water/survival swim for 10 minutes, and snorkel swim with mask/fins/snorkel (maybe 450 yards). You may also have to swim underwater for 15m (50 feet) or so. The idea is that you should not be COMPLETELY dependent upon your equipment in the water.

If you are comfortable in the water but lack these basic swimming skills, my advice is that you spend time developing these skills before signing up for the course. You'll be a lot more confident when asked to do these skills and will be able to enjoy the course that much more because you won't be dreading the water skills tests.

So, yes, if you are comfortable in the water there is no reason you cannot become a scuba diver but you should spend some time developing better swimming skills before signing up.

EDIT; By the way, you say you can "float horizontally, either face up or down". If you can float on your back for 10 minutes without support, that would satisfy the survival swim requirement in a NAUI course.

On 20.01.2004 we left cold Germany with a small group of 8 people who wanted to escape the winter and enjoy a few nice days at Embudu Village (Maldives).

After about 11 hour's flight, we landed at Male. After customs, we were already expected from our tour leader. (As a small note: It is forbidden do bring alcohol to the Maldives. The hand luggage and the suitcases are scanned for).

Directly at the airport our boat was already waiting for us, which should bring us to Embudu Village. The transfer usually took about 45 min. But in recent weeks, there were strong currents so we had to make a detour. The holiday begins already on the boat. You took your shoes off and you don't have to care about your luggage.

At the airport we had our check-in maps of the island and get out, so the check in at reception is very quick - we got the bungalow we reserved. In the evening of our arrival day our tour leader gave us a short briefing about the Maldives and our island. Even the local dive center was there.

Embudu Village is a small and quiet island. The comfort of the island is normal.
The bungalows are built along the water and in the middle of the island are the restaurant, bar and reception. The island has a few water bungalows. We had the opportunity to test one of these water bungalows for 2 days. We couldn't sleep at all. The splashing of the water kept us awake. In future, we would not book one of these bungalows.

The normal bungalows are simple and functionally furnished. They are cleaned twice daily. The bathroom is integrated into the bungalow.

As the island consists totally of sand, we didn't need our shoes at all for 2 weeks.

The hotel offers full board and all inclusive, which can be booked directly at the hotel. Breakfast and dinner are always served in buffet form and is really very good. The selection of food is not excessive.

Swimming and snorkeling is possible everywhere in the small lagoons around the island. You can even circle around the island while snorkeling.

The house reef is about 3 / 4 destroyed. There is a corner where the old and intact reef is still present, but at this corner there are usually strong currents. The snorkeling is worth again, because the fish has not changed. We had several baby sharks, manta rays, turtles, rays, etc.

The diving base is located near the water bungalows. We have decided to take the boat twice a day. The base line, the instructor and the crew of the boats were very competent and friendly.

Résumé As for me, I can only recommend the island. We were certainly not the there for the last time.

A scuba diving computer, which is better known as a dive computer, is a digital device that can do the task of managing nitrogen without requiring the diver to have a watch or dive table. As a combination of a timer and a depth gauge plus some intelligent software that helps to compute absorption of gases, the scuba diving computer is a popular device that is used by most experienced divers.

It is very necessary for the diver to know about remaining nitrogen as well as decompression and this may also be done by manual dive tables, but the scuba diving computer is much more valuable as it can greatly improve the dive experience through automation of the management of nitrogen.

In reality, the scuba diving computer will not plan a dive for the scuba diver, who is still solely responsible for correct and safe planning in conformance with health guidelines. On the other hand, the scuba diving computer will be able to keep track of the depth as well as time spent underwater, calculates the amount of nitrogen that the diver's body contains and alerts the divers when these levels become too high and also helps the diver to take suitable decompression stops whenever necessary.

What Happens
When the diver performs a traditional scuba dive there are just two variables that are used to describe the dive and these are maximum depth as well as time. When one calculates the amount of absorbed nitrogen one assumes that the diver had plunged immediately to maximum depth and remained there for some time and later returned to the surface.

In such an instance, the dive profile is said to be square, because when graphed on an X-Y axis, for instance, it produces a rectangular like trench. However, in reality the dive is not like that and a diver would descend slowly, swim about and change depth to find his or her way around reefs or bottom formations and then slowly return back to the surface.

The main advantage of a scuba diving computer is that it allows for longer bottom lines and dive tables having a square profile are mostly conservative having exaggerated absorption which tends to lean towards the safe side. However, the scuba diving computer enables a curved profile and regularly allows the diver to stay submerged for longer periods of time.

Therefore, before choosing a scuba diving computer it may also be wise to check out the brand and model as well as ascertain whether the batteries easy to change, and is the computer's interface easy to read and is it backlit or not?

I think that's a Mares Vector 1000 BC. They had a pretty good review from some independent testers. The only thing I can see there that's to dislike is the plastic D rings. Dunno why they didn't bother with stainless.
The rest of the package is "ok", meaning fine for entry level but I wouldn't want to push those regs in cold water and freezing...nope not at all.
Price is ok, but it usually is for online sales (which I'm against for dive gear). You should visit a shop to try things on. Everyone's body is different, not to mention what you plan on doing with that gear. Some rigs suck at wreck diving, but are great reef cruisers, for example.
Think long and hard about your budget and what you need to lay out in the immediate future. Some parts of your rig can be rented until you have the funds to buy and it won't put you in the poor house right away. You'll also have the chance to evaluate more different rigs this way, before a large investment. What also works, is to find divers in the area you plan on doing the most diving and ask them what they prefer and what works in that area. They're gonna know, as they've already travelled that road.
All the major manufacturers are good, Dacor, Mares, OMS, Dive Rite, Scuba Pro Tusa, etc. Prices vary because you're paying for little extras on each particular rig. Some regs may be environmentals, meaning you can add 1/3 on to the cost immediately as compared to a similar reg that isn't. Same goes with those stainless D rings I mentioned earlier. There should be little or no plastic attachment points on a solid BC, but you're gonna pay for it. Stainless costs more than plastic.
I guess it all comes down to the old adage " Buy the best that you can afford" and dive within the limitations of that equipment.

It depends on the pressure (psi) of the scuba tank. Because most scuba tanks are 3000psi, I'll assume it is, but don't listen to what I'm saying if it isn't. You'd need to fill your 68ci compressed air tank with a 100ci scuba tank.

Math:
100ci - 68ci = 32ci

So, in conclusion, you will only get about one fill out of each scuba tank.

Again, if your scuba tank is of higher or lower pressure, it changes everything.

We haven't been diving off Oahu but like you have gone to the other islands.

I looked through some old dive magazines we have and found the Best of Hawaii Dive Operators in the Oct 2006 issue of Scuba Diving - but they didn't list any for Oahu! In the May 2007 issue of the same magazine, they listed the best dive sites for Oahu - Makaha Caverns (open ended lava tube), Rainbow Reef at the Ala Moana Beach Park and two wrecks: YO-257 has large holes for easy penetration and the Mahi which has a lot of sponge and coral growth.

In ads, Dive Oahu says they are Oahu's premiere dive operator but I can't vouch for them from personal experience.

It sounds like your interests are closer to the Navy. You will always be close to water, and you will definitely travel.

I guess the big question is what you want to do? There are plenty of jobs in the Navy, I am drawing a blank though when thinking of one that would be beneficial for your Masters Degree.

I would ask the recruiter for a list of jobs available. Talk to a couple of recruiters (just to cover your backside - sometimes they may push you in one direction because it is best for them, not necessarily for you), and even see if you can visit a base to talk to people in those jobs. You would be surprised how welcoming Navy professionals can be to one looking to join up.

The differences of a cold vs swine flu are in how serious they are. A common cold is normally located at your head level. It doesn't affect you systemically, so it is just a mild illness.

The swine flu, which simply has a different strain of virus to the normal flu, is more serious, as fever always accompanies the flu.

If you have a fever, it means the illness is systemic, so is more serious. But having a fever is also the body's way of preventing a virus from taking hold. As long as you are strong enough to withstand a fever, it should never be brought down by the use of suppressive drugs.

A fever also has some form of body ache, which a cold doesn't. Again, body aches show something systemic.

A flu can also have all or some of the normal cold symptoms, such as sneezing, coughing, runny nose, headache, restlessness, stuffed up feeling, sore throat.

So the symptoms of a cold vs swine flu, or any flu come to that, is a question of location. Cold symptoms are limited to your head region. Flu symptoms are systemic, with body aches and a fever. And possibly some cold symptoms, as well.

Both cold and flu symptoms can last from a day or two to weeks, depending on how healthy you are.

What you choose for the solution of either, will determine when you get your next dose.

Treating yourself holistically will start to take you towards better overall health. Treating yourself with drugs will make you more sick overall.

Apart from eating lots of fresh fruit and veggies, getting out into the sun and exercising, as a preventer for future colds and flus, diving into the wonderful world of homeopathy and home prescribing for yourself, may open new doors for you.

A simple kit which focuses on winter aliments is not expensive. It will come with instructions. And you might find a home study course, a book or a magazine helpful, too.
