Dip pens are great for line art and cartooning! Two of the advantages of dip pens; they can be used with waterproof ink such as India ink changing ink colors is a snap - just wipe of the nib and dip it in a different color.

As the name indicates, they are designed to be dipped in a jar of ink or ink well. A hundred years ago, everyone knew how to use a dip pen. Now, it's a special skill. Here are the things you need to know:

1) If you dip your pen in ink and try to write like a ballpoint pen, the ink will run out too fast and blob all over the place. Dip pens should be held at a flatter angle than regular ballpoint pens. That means that rather than hold the pen with your finger tips, it should really be held with the thumb and middle finger along the sides and the index finger on top. This gives the pen a lower angle of 45 degrees or less.

2) Use a light touch. Unless the pen nib is clogged, ink will begin flowing as soon as you touch the paper. Pressing down like you would with a ballpoint pen can damage the nib of a dip pen.

3) Strokes that pull rather than push work best and are easier on the nib. And keep it moving. A dip pen works by capillary action. If you leave it in one spot on the paper, all of the ink will deposit itself there.

4) Clean your dip pen nib after every use. Some inks clean up with just a wash in some water, others need a little soap action.

Beyond that, practice makes perfect. Work on practice sheets before you do anything important. Just draw and draw, and let yourself have some fun with it.

There are many many styles of nibs for dip pens, and many ink colors, too. If you just give yourself time to get used to your new pen, you will have a lot of fun and adventures.

Pens get their original names from the Latin word 'pinna' which translates as feather. A pen is a slender, long and rotund apparatus utilized to apply ink to a surface for the principle of writing on paper or any other surface. There are many varying types of pens which include the ball point pen (distributes a thick oil-based ink by way of a minute hard ball), the roller ball pen (doles out a water-based fluid or gel through a spherical tip akin to a ball point pen and is easily applied on paper), the fountain pen (which employs a water-based viscous ink conveyed through a nib, using the capillary action technology) and last but not least, the felt tip pen (also known as a marker pen, which possess a porous tip made of tough compounds).

The gel-pen is considered one of the smoothest writing instruments in the world today, thanks to modern technology. It is a wonderful tool for crafting, although it does have some setbacks. For instance, a gel-pen can suddenly clog or bleed, making writing a chore. The good news is that this type of gel-pens can be repaired and life span prolonged. By using normal household items, your favorite gel-pen can once again be as good as new. The more common problems associated with gel-pens is clogging and and dose not give out enough pressure. Help is now at hand.

To repair your gel-pen, you will need a craft knife, some cotton swab, a bottle of nail polish remover, a bamboo skewer and a malleable pencil eraser.

To begin, ensure that the tip of the gel-pen has been properly cleaned, as it may have stopped working due to clogged dried ink that prevent the minute ball from rolling properly. You can us cotton swabs dipped in liberal doses of nail polish remover to accomplish this. You might have to repeat this process several time and test the pen to see if it's functioning properly.

Next, you will need to take out the ink tube from the external canister of the pen. As most type of pens unscrew like bottle caps, you will find this quite easy to accomplish. If this does not work, attempt dislodging from the back and observe if you can take out the ink tube by applying pressure from behind.

Augment the ink pressure and incise a tiny fragment of eraser to place into the ink tube. With your craft knife, pare a small plug to be placed into the ink tube. Keep I mind that it does not need to be cylindrical as the eraser is supple. To attain optimum results, begin with a slightly bigger plug and pare it down to get the desired dimension.

Now you will need to put the eraser plug into the end of the ink tube. The first few trials will see you slotting and pushing it in adequate enough for it to stay in place. Tires, whether for cars, RVs, trucks, or buses, have three functions:

Faulty tires can cost lives. Even new tires over five or six years shouldn't be put on vehicles, because rubber content degrades over time. (note: the last three numbers on the tire's serial number tell the week and year the tire was made.)

So, how did we end up with rubber tires, anyway? In Central and South America rubber was used for centuries before it was introduced to western culture. The rubber was harvested from the tree sap and used as a pencil eraser to "rub out" pencil marks--"rubber."

In the 1830s rubber, the waterproof gum from Brazil, came to the United States. One problem--it froze in the winter and turned to glue in the summer. Charles Goodyear thought a dry powder could be mixed into the gum to absorb the stickyness. He tried magnesia and a combination of magnesia, quicklime, and nitric acid. Alas, his rubber overshoes turned into a smelly pile of goo in the summer heat.

After five years of failures, Goodyear tried a combination of gum and sulphur, added heat, and made waterproof rubber that remained waterproof rubber in all seasons. He had created vulcanized rubber, named after Vulcan, the god of fire. This vulcanized rubber was more durable and more elastic. Goodyear was so confident of his new creation that he predicted rubber paint, car springs, inflatable life rafts, rubber soccer balls and frogmen suits 100 years before they became available.

In 1888 John Dunlop invented the first air-filled (i.e., pneumatic)tire--for bicycles. Andre Michelin came up with the first pneumatic tire for automobiles in 1895. (The Michelin Man was created in 1898.)

The Goodyear Tire Company, named after Charles, who had died in 1860 with a $200,000 debt--patented the first tubeless tire, but didn't promote it commercially until 1954 on the Packard. They also added carbon to the formula which increased the life of the tires.

Mountable rims, which allowed drivers to fix their own flats, were developed in 1904 and Frank Seiberling invented the first grooved tires for better traction in 1908. These grooves, or tread designs, also improved drivers' control, riding comfort and tire life.

It wasn't until 1911, however, that Philip Strauss invented the first really successful tire. Until that time tires had been wooden, metal, or solid rubber. Strauss developed the combination rubber tire with an air-filled inner tube.

There were natural rubber shortages during World War II and synthetic rubber was created to offset the shortage. Synthetic rubber is synthesized from petroleum and other minerals. This surpassed the use of natural rubber for the first time in 1960.

So, now that you know how long it took to get those tires for your vehicle, take care of them! Keep them properly inflated and save money, gas, and your own peace of mind.

A towable tube is a guaranteed way to have a lot of fun during your time on the water--to make sure it stays that way you should follow these five tips for a safe day.

-- Never get on a towable tube without wearing a life vest. This goes for anyone in your group who may be riding on the tube, and really for the people in the boat as well. Being able to swim is simply not enough to ensure your safety-you could hit your head and pass out or get pulled into a strong current from the boat after falling into the water. Always wear a life vest and make sure everyone else in your group does, too.

-- Wear water helmets, especially when you have multiple riders. It may seem silly, because what would you hit your head on in the water? Well, for one, you could bump heads with another rider. If you have a helmet on when you bump heads and slip into the water, it's no big deal. Without the helmet you have a dangerous situation on your hands.

-- You must be a strong swimmer to ride on a towable inflatable. People slip into the water all the time and generally it's no big deal, unless you're unable to swim. With the current of the boat pushing against you it's important you're a strong swimmer before riding in the tube.

-- Follow any posted safety regulations at the area where you'll be boating. This may seem fairly basic, but because of that this rule gets overlooked a lot. Look for the posted sign with regulations and take a minute to read it over in case there are any specific things to watch out for where you'll be that day.

-- Don't drink alcohol before riding on a towable tube. This is another one that often gets overlooked, but can be a real life saver. When you've had a few drinks and ride on one of these fun water toys it's even easier to fall into the water, hit your head, and end up in a dangerous situation. Having a few drinks on your day at the lake can be a fun, relaxing way to spend the day-just don't ride in the tube.

Like a lot of keen carp anglers I fish throughout the fishing season as much in winter as I do in the summer months, it was during one frustrating fishing session that I came up with this rig by pure chance last winter.

After an hour or so walking around the lake, I managed to find the carp, got set up found some likely areas to place baits, once baits were cast out and freebies scatted in the same area, all that was left was to have a fresh brew and soak up the early morning winter sun.

During the course of the morning I had carp activity in the spots that I was fishing, but to no avail the carp were not having it, the bait I was using was a proven home made boilie mix that always worked well for me in the winter months.

What was up with those wily carp?

Later on during the morning a pleasure angler friend turned up for a days fishing and set up in the next swim to mine, at least I could have some good company even though I was pulling my hair out!

While my friend set his gear up, I made us some much welcome hot tea.

Walking over to him with mugs of tea in hand, he was just finishing catapulting some maggots around his float. This is when I had a 'light bulb' idea – what about maggots for the carp? They were used years ago but nobody seemed to use them for carp these days. So after 'borrowing' a hand full of maggots from my friend, I thought I'd give them a go on one rod as I had nothing to lose.

After scratching my head for a rig to use the maggots with I came up with a rig along these lines...it has since proved a great success summer or winter.

How to make the rig - I tied a normal hook link about 18 inches long, the hook link was made from 12lb fluorocarbon line, the hook being a korda hybrid teflon coated wide gape size 8, at the other end I tied a size 10 berkley swivel.

Obtain a length of 2lb mono line about a foot long and a 12mm cork ball.

I simply threaded the length of 2lb line through the middle of the cork ball using a sewing needle, tied a slip knot around the cork ball, cut the short line tail off, now I tied the remaining 2lb line with cork ball attached, to the eye of the hook and whipped the 2lb line around the hook shank, the distance between bend of hook and cork ball was about 25mm. (this can be a little difficult with the cork ball in the way – you should be able to whip it around once and knot it so the 2lb line and cork ball follow directly from the back of the hook shank)

Now I picked up four maggots with one hand, holding the taper end of them, with my other hand I have a tube of super glue which I just dab on the maggots at the other end and stick them to the cork ball! Repeat this until the entire cork ball is covered in maggots – this hook link can be tied to any terminal tackle / lead weight combination of your choice. Now not forgetting your putty weight as this is a pop-up rig, place a small piece of lead-free putty or lead free shot on the hook link just below the hook eye and test it in the margin water, just so it sinks slowly, once it does you're ready to go! You may laugh at this rig - but it sure works.

During that winter session I caught a 23lb mirror carp within 30minutes of casting the rig out! Also in the early morning I landed a 25lb common carp on the same rig.

Yes maybe small potatoes in today's carp fishing scene of forty pounders, but I have shown this rig to other friends and they have done equally well, one chap who was really struggling on his venue used it and second time out, fished the 'cork ball maggots rig' over his bed of boilies and caught the lake record!

One of the main reasons I think this rig works so well is, presently most carp anglers I see have their baits so close to the hook, and they've done this for many years now, the carp learn very quickly especially the older bigger monsters, this rig gives more bait movement near the hook, and of course it is something different that the carp have not seen, imagine if you glued pink maggots to that cork ball what a sight - pop-upped just off the lake bottom, blimey just irresistible for those finicky carp!!
